Hi everyone - you guys have been wonderful in helping me with my rescue spaniel.

Having been to the vets today I have been told that his anal glands are okay and he is fine. When he passes motion he bleeds, then has a light pink mucus that is a little fishy in smell - I am sure that he has an impacted anal gland.

I have tried to milk it myself but only a little discharge comes out and a little watery pink liquid.

I just want to make sure that I can keep it as clean as possible. Does anyone have any suggestions - I clean him everytime we get home.

Sorry no advice, despite my Lab having to have his anal glands emptied every few weeks! He smells 'fishy' but is very good at keeping himself clean.
I would say ask the vet but you've already been.
I'm sure someone with more experience will be along soon.

If you think it's an anal gland problem and the vet didn't, is there another vet at the practice you could see for a second opinion? I understand sometimes diet can make a difference with anal gland issues. Hope you can get it sorted.

I always added a heaped tbspoonful of bran to my dogs' meals and never had an anal gland problem with any of them.

Think I would ask for a second opinion if you can.

One of my Labs used to have real problems till they took her in and under anesthetic packed the glands with ABs. I was told to sprinkle Isolgel over her food (same sort of thing as fibrolgel)and she never had a probmlem after that.

Think I might try this bran for my two.

Charlie has been plagued with anal gland problems, often needing to go to the vets every three to four weeks to get them emptied. I tried bran etc and it didn't work for him. Have just started him on BARF diet and so far, everything crossed and touching wood, it seems to be really helping, if people are not comfortable with this may be replacing a couple of meals a week with bones may help.

Interesting!

We've tried everything with Paddy (apart from BARF diet but he doesn't digest bones, chews etc.) The bran diddn't make any difference He has firm poos and looks to be struggling but as soon as his glands are emptied, he's at it again! Apparently some dogs are just prone to it.........

We had serious problems with our Molly and her anal glands before she passed away. The vet told us she had anal furunculosis and that it was a disease more commonly found in German Shepherds. The poor mite had to have regular visits to the vets for a clear out and at one point they put her under sedation to pack them out with Anti-biotics. She was on the for the last year of her life. They kept reducing the dose but the next time we went back she had to have it increased. Apparently there was not medication that could cure it and one of the only options was to have an operation to remove them. Sadly she passed away before it got to that stage.

I could be wrong but I seem to recall out Vet said removing was a last option as can cause incontinence.

Thanks everyone. I have now been to two vets and they all say that he has an anal fissure that is not serious and would not recommend surgery - he has probably caught himself when he was scooting on the grass. I am just making sure he is clean when he goes for his walk. The problem with surgery is that it may stop his muscle strength in his anus which would not be good. He has his glands cleared every few months and he is also wormed. Very frustrating more for Benjamin than me in many ways as he gets stressed if he can smell himself.

Thanks for the update Geraldine, sorry to hear this but glad it's nothing serious.

I suppose if Ben's having them emptied regularly and he's keeping clean that's the main thing but like you say, very frustrating for the dog, Paddy's the same!
