Hi

I was windering if anyone had any suggestions for toys/activities etc that we could leave for Jake to do/play with when we go out. He's no longer howling the place down as he's not crated, which seems to have reduced his stress levels, and the neighbours but he's bored. He's being walked every morning for anything from 15 to 30 mins depending on the day, but we don't think he sleeps at all when we're out. After tea and our evening walk he'll go to sleep and he's sleeping nearly every night right through till we get up. I make our walks different each day so he's not getting bored walking the same place every day. We leave him a frozen stuffed kong and plenty of treats in his treat ball, usually the kong is empty, but the treat ball sometimes still has as much in it as when we left. I've tried the toilet roll cardboard with a toy stufed inside, which he seems to like, espcially as it's the cats' toy I'm using it's not like they were ever playing with it. It doesn't last long though. Even although he's destroyed some of the post, it's only the junk mail that's totally shredded. But the mail cage is now fitted. We'll see if it works tomorrow We're ot sure if the up lighter was on the floor because he was bugging the cat or if he was doing a daft run round the room or if he was chasing his treat ball, but it was on the floor and the bulb was light. It's now been moved so he can't knock it over. If anyone has an ideas/suggestions they'd be very much appreciated. Thanks.

What do you put in kong?I've used dog food with peanut butter to plug the hole them freeze it,takes ages for them do get it all out,had a treat ball but neighbour moaned because he was tossing it all over the house trying to get the food out lol. Also depends how long you are leaving him but I've done a big box stuffed with newspaper, treats and toys, makes a big mess though.

His kong has some little puppy bones that I break in half just so that I can fit more in, a few puppy markies, a garlic biccie broken up and the hole filled with the liver squirty stuff and if I have space I put a bone in the end so he's got to eat it before he can start working on the paste. We're quite lucky, our living room isn't joined to the neighbour's house as we've got a path through to the back garden, it's just the bedrooms that join and the other neighbour is a wee bit deaf so she doesn't hear a thing from him. I like the idea of the box, I've got a box in the kitchen we were going to throw out and I've not yet got rid of last weeks free paper. I'm quite sure he'd love it He's left for about 3 hours Tuesday morning and then again in the afternoon, I'm home for an hour at lunch time and sometimes we play and other times he wants to go play with Tyra next door if he can hear her barking outside. Wednesday he's the 3 hours in the morning again, but not quite the 3 in the afternoon. Thursdays is the longer day. I keep trying to build up flexi time so I can leave earlier on the Thursday, but so far I've not needed to (Kris has been suffering a bad back, dying duck and thunder storm come to mind alot with him, but not this time ). And on Fridays it's maybe 2 hours max, depending on if Kris gets asked to go in earlier or not. The other days we try and leave him, even if only for 20 minues, just so he doesn't get used to us being there all the time and then have to go back to being left all over again.

Sorry not sure how old jake is but I didnt know what to do with Ruby when she was a puppy. She is the famous plaster eater striaght through to the breeze block so when i left her to go to work i used to casually on purpose leave a newspaper on a chair. Yep she use to chew it and shredd it but she didnt get anything else. She also destroyed catalogues etc. we leave the argos one out now but she very rarely chews it. Not sure if she should have chewed newspaper but if she ate plaster then i thought she must havea pretty strong tummy lol

Jake's gonna be 5 months old on Monday. We've got some old cardboard packing under the stairs, and he likes cardboard, so we're thinking we can leave that for him to chew. Funnily enough he chewed our Argos catalogue too. Wonder if they put something on it that attracts them

I've never fed a dog banana, Kris is worried it'll go right through him. Guess we could try him with a little bit and see if there's any reaction.

My pair love bananas too and they always lick out the yogurt pots. Very helpful for the recyling bins

For the last week Jake has hard a box with newspaper in it. He sits and watches as 3 of his toys get hidden inside and a treat as well sometime. He really does make a mess with it, but it's fine, it's only newspaper and not anything important Today I used an empty toblerone package and put in a tripe stick and some puppy bone biccies. When I got in he'd shredded the wrapper and devoured the tripe sticks and bones He's doing really well with the empty loo roll as well, it gets chucked about all over the place before being ripped apart

Thanks everyone. Jake is doing really well now, sleeps on his own bed at night, doesn't bark/howl/whine or cry when we're out and only sometimes chases Storm but never Max, he knows better than that

I might just try the cardboard box strategy with Honey. That'd keep her amused for hours!!!

Glad all is going well with Jake. Give him a squidge from me.

That's interesting Stacy.
We crated Lizzie from day 1, the crate was huge so she looked lost in it. We found that a cardboard tomato box fit perfectly in one half and we put her blanket in that for her bed. We were at the supermarket and local grocers every day to ensure a continuous supply! They were 'stock-piled' in the garage!
She ignored most of the other stuff we left her, she just liked to chew the box. It helped her to keep clean too as she would only wee and dirty on the paper in the other half of the crate.
By the time she was too big to fit in a tomato box she'd stopped chewing it!

I appreciate that we're very fortunate as Lizzie has never been a chewer and she's never wrecked anything (although she did have a thing for wood and sticks, shrubs etc at one time) I don't know whether its just coincidence or whether the crate helped. I'd never used a crate and didn't want to use it but she loves the security of it. She obviously liked the box too!

Our two like playing with the inners from kitchen rolls etc too, they run around with them then shred them.

xx
