Hi Guys!

Just wondering what you guys were thinking about this "Insurance" the government proposed...? I can't see any threads about it yet and I only came back today, so I am not sure if the story has been about for a bit...?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8556195.stm

I am already thinking this will be unfair to the responsible dog owners out there.. Again its like you are being punished, somehow...?

I also started to wonder how this would work, a different premium for different dog breeds...?

Just wondering what everyone's thoughts were..?

I saw this on the news at lunchtime.
It refers to 3rd Party insurance.
Can't see how they can enforce this and once again it would only be the law abiding dog owners who would bother

I saw an advert in the paper for the Dogs Trust which I found interesting.

I think for £20 that is a good deal

Yes I saw that as well Melita - brilliant idea.

All pet insurance gives you 3rd party for your dog - if all pet owners insured their dogs, there would be less abandoned ones when told by a vet the cost of some ops or medication.

Something needs to be done, as everyone is flooded with dogs and it's not right that these poor things are sometimes left to rot in kennels. Trouble is, as we all know too well, it will be us, the law abiding and loving dog owners that will need to sure-up the scum that aren't - what's new. It will be a mammoth task tryimg to police/enforce all that they say they want to.

However, I live in hope that one day, all dogs will live in happy, loving homes.

I don't know what the answer is but I do worry about things that will "punish" (financially or otherwise) the good dog owners and leave the bad ones continuing as they are. I look at the Merseyside Police "amnesty" of "dangerous dogs" a few years ago as a very sad example.

I think insurance is a very good idea even if it's not compulsory and I think sadly in today's society that third party insurance is advisable even if you have thousands put away for vet bills. The Dogs Trust membership looks good for those without pet insurance and the £20 a year covers the household's dogs, not just one dog.

Thanks for that Mel it sounds good value for money .
I agree with you Jill why should responsible dog owners be punished
Let's take for example a little old lady on a state pension struggling as it is to pay her utility bills and afford a nice warm meal
Now having the worry of paying out extra money for insuring her little dog .
Whats going to happen will she go without herself or be forced to give her dog up to a rescue centre ?
This labour goverment wants to get its priorities right and look after the good honest english tax payers
This country is in shambles they are trying to claw money left right and centre
I can see a petition being set up against this
If anyone hears of one please let me know

They cannot even police the use of mobile phones in cars so how are they going to police if a dog is insured.

The rule is inpossible to police.

It's just another stealth tax if you ask me, typical of Rip-off Britain!
The Dogs trust scheme sounds good if this stupid idea goes ahead, at least they might benefit from it. My dogs are insured so they're covered but it costs me £600 a year for them both, some people won't be able to afford to insure their dogs (the example Di used being a good one) That will come in handy when more people abandon their dogs because they can't afford to keep them under these new rules!

The debate has been going on for years but the dog license HAS to be re-introduced (no mention of that in any of these proposals) You have to have a license to watch TV and to put your car on the road, albeit not cheap either! They're not living things, a dog is!! They can manage to monitor the above so why not dog ownership.
Also, dog breeders should be registered and have to pay a fee, that would help to stop irresponsible breeding.

As always, whatever they decide to do you'll still get all the 'undesirables' finding a way to cheat the system, at the expense of responsible owners.

xx

Does the government honestly believe that microchipping and 3rd party insurance will stamp this out?
If they do they are out of touch with reality.

I feel very sad for the poor dogs...

Melita, those people need shooting! It makes me cry to think of what those poor dogs go through - they're suffering, leading horrible lives you'd not wish on anyone and in the meantime innocent people have their friendly pet dogs seized by the police and held in isolation for months/years because of their physical appearance.

I really think if things are going to change they need to get rid of BSL and target bad breeders and irresponsible owners. It's just sickening isn't it :-(((

As far as I rmember Dogs Trust have always given insurance cover if you are a memeber, not something new.

This insurance lark sounds like yet another knee jerk reaction to something and of ocurse a way to scrape yet another penny from us.

Pleased to see on the News tonight this has been shelved...

The government has ruled out forcing all dog owners to insure against their pets attacking people - a week after suggesting the idea.

Environment Secretary Hilary Benn said the proposal would not be turned into policy, as ministers did not "want to penalise" responsible owners.

The insurance suggestion for England and Wales was part of a consultation on dangerous dogs launched last Tuesday.

They probably realised what a stupid idea it was in the first place!

I was relieved to see that today on the news too...

Maybe they will concentrate on penalising the bad people....
