Hypothetically speaking .....

If a dog has been adopted formally from a rescue organisation, who legally owns the dog? And, if the rescue wanted the dog back, would they have any legal claim?

What are the legalities here?

I know someone will know on here!
Thanks guys and gals!

Not sure about the other rescues, but when a dog is adopted from us, the dog is to all intense and purposes, the property of the new owners. However, they sign an adoption form setting out various things which we expect them to adhere to as owners of the said dog/s. Should these guidelines be broken, or if we visit the dog and are not happy with they way it is being cared for, we do have the authority to reclaim that dog back into our ownership and care. All microchips are registered into the name of the area coord that dealt with the dog and the new owners.

To my knowledge, I don't think we have ever had to reclaim a dog because of ill-treatment etc, so not sure how the forms would stand up in Court.

We keep such a tight eye on our adopters, they don't get the chance to do anything we don't agree with

Hope that helps answer your query a bit.

Not quite certain on the legalities Ali
As my adoption form is very brief
I do know when i applied to have Molly's mircochip details transferred from the rescue to me it stated that i was the legal owner
I think if a rescue contacted me for my dog back i would want reimbursing for the thousands of pounds i had spent on vets bills ,medication, food, toys, leads collars etc
Somehow i dont think they would be prepared to pay that much money out do you
