hi guys hav'nt been on for a while lost my little meg a week before xmas (none lurcher in body but a heart of a fighter)she was 14 but was ill for a while & told me she'd had enough as i firmly belive they can. anyway i just wanted some opinions on a couple of this if anyone does'nt mind. the 1st is in the last few months of megans illness i noticed changes in both willow & spots behavour just small things at first obedience started going down hill/did'nt want to stay in same room alone with her etc but the 1 i found most upsetting & hardest to control was the aggresion they started to show towards her to a point were i would not leave them alone in the house as i was woried for megans safty she was such a sweet dog would never say boo to a gost let alone another dog could anyone tell me why they think they were like that as i must admit i has played on my mind for some time. the 2nd thing is willow seems to have over sencetive skin & paws & has got worce as she's gotten older the skin bit is not such a problem infact can be quite funny when i fuss her she has very short cauce fur you sholud see her it's as if she's gettin a high ! her eyes roll ears stick out & i swear i can see a smile on her face not sure if thats a good or bad thing. the bigest problem though is trying to do her claws last time the vet did em it took a muzzel & 2 nurces to hold her & i did'nt want to put her throught that truma agen. if i do em i get the gobin of the snarling wont let me keep hold of her paw the works but she does'nt evan try to bite me as far as i know i have never hert her or made them bleed when doing them so i can't understand why she puts up such a fight & if the aggression is for real why does'nt she go all the way & even atempt to bite me is there anyway i can make our buety sessions less agro for both of us if any of the above makes sence to anyone or you have bin there done that can you please give me opinions as to why she's like that & is there any way i can help her trust me if that is the problem thank's guys dawn |

So sorry to hear of Meg's passing. I dont know about your other dogs behavoir, I lost 3 of my oldies last year and non of mine reacted differently at all.
As for the nail clipping though, my Tess is a demon - I have to take her to the vets too, worst thing was after 7 years of this I actually managed to do them myself last year and I caught her she was ever so good, but I promised never to do it again. She might be upset at a vet visit and muzzle but at least they dont hurt her the only thing I can suggest for your dog is perhaps trying rescue remedy before a visit to try calming.
Maybe someone else can help.

Sorry to hear about Megan :( I've no experience of the way your other dogs' behaved, mine weren't like that when our last oldie was ill.
With regard to the nail clipping, have you tried introducing a tasty treat into your regime? I've found that's worked with mine for various things - nails, doing ears etc. I make home-made tuna cake so that's something they see as a pretty high reward, but you could use bits of cheese, chopped up sausage, whatever.
For the nails, I started off by giving them a treat before we got started, as they sniffed the nail clipper, held it near to a paw etc. and gave them lots of praise and a treat each time I cut a bit of nail to begin with. As they became increasingly accepting, I am able to reduce the amount of treats they have each time, but I always make sure to give them something. It has worked with putting stuff into Max's ears too, he used to hate it, now he'll sit happily while I do it and then wait for a treat :)
Take it in baby steps to begin with if she is that adverse to it. Do you have a clicker? I've watched videos on YouTube where a trainer has clicked/treated to teach a dog to allow nails to be cut. Obviously if she's snarling etc. then be careful - maybe you could muzzle her at home and feed her treats through the muzzle?

So sorry to hear about Megan. No advice I'm afraid, never had any experience of odd behaviour apart from my goldfish!! They will attack a fish if they sense it's ill but not heard of this in dogs. Underlying problems that you're not aware of are sometimes the cause of behaviour changes. My brothers dog had cysts as she got older and she sometimes turned on people when they were stroking her. Like Willow, she also had homicidal tendencies towards vets, she had to be sedated before she went, she was so bad!

I know wild animals sense when a pack member is ill and dying - they will chase it from the pack quite viciously and not allow it to return. Not heard of this in domestic animals though. But they do sense things we don't, so maybe they knew.
As for nail clipping, I've tried it all with Charlie as he's always hated it. It is a long very slow process of one nail per evening, if I'm lucky If he's having a GA or heavy sedation for somethig, I usually get my vet to do them for me

It is a puzzle to know why your dogs reacted as they did. Was Meg on any medication or having clinical treatment that would put them in mind of a vet? I had a bad reaction once from one of my dogs when he came into contact with a friend. He really growled at her. It was a complete puzzle until we realised she was a nurse and so probably smelt a bit like the vet, who he hated.

so sorry to hear about little Meg, run free sweetheart.
No answers to this one but on the nail clipping both of ours have to be done when I'm out the room. For some reason it makes me really squeamish and they pick up on it. If I'm in the vicinity it's a lost cause as they are aggitated but if I stay clear they quite happily lie there and have them clipped
